Former Jewish children's centre at no. 58/58a Wohlersallee.
The Altona High German Jewish community (Hochdeutsch Israelitische-Gemeinde Altona) owned the
building at no. 58/58a Wohlersallee. Situated on the border between Altona and Hamburg it was
established as a children's centre for Jewish children from Altona and Hamburg. In 1929 ambitious
alterations were carried out to make the building better suited to its purpose. The cellar was
converted into wash-rooms and bathrooms with shower facilities. The ground-floor and first floor
accommodated the play and work rooms of the kindergarten and day home for schoolchildren in the
afternoon. The doctor's consulation room for babycare and youth welfare was also on the first floor.
There was a yard where, in good weather, the children could play. In 1936, due to a decrease in
demand, the day nursery was amalgamated and moved in with the day nursery at
no. 5 Grünestraße/no. 10 Gademannstraße. In 1942 the ownership of the building was transferred to the
Reichsvereinigung der Juden in Deutschland.
