Wesselhoeftpark:
The Wesselhoeftpark is part of the chain of parks stretching along the river Elbe. Two lakes
occupy the centre of the park, circumvented by a path, with grassy areas alternating with wooded
areas.
History:
Around 1700 a mill was built on this site, which, in 1730, became the property of the
van der Smissen family. In 1825 Frau Sillem bought the land and a year later built
a country house, which today is No. 352 Elbchaussee. The park was created and named
Sillems Garten. In 1864 Carl Wesselhoeft bought the property, following several
other owners, converted the house and improved the park with exotic plants. In 1953 a part of
the park was sold to the city of Hamburg, the rest remaining in the Wesselhoeft family. The stream,
the Teufelsaue (meadow), and lakes are today protected as an area of natural beauty and wild life.
