The Evoking of Server Software from PCs

All application software for PCs (e.g. compilers, word processing etc.) are stored on the Novell servers.
This software is accessed after "login".

with the command: login ID
Your ID is either your Project ID or your Standard (restricted) User ID
When it is necessary to login to a particular server then the command is: login servername/ID

An application form for a Project ID is acquired from the User Consulting Office Room 129
A Standard (restricted) User ID can be directly processed via Workstation in Room 19 (Ground Floor).

After login you are required to enter your Password.
Initially
for a Project ID this is geheim
for a Standard (restricted) User ID this is your matriculation number
After entering the correct initial password you will be prompted to change it. This you should immediately do with your individual password which must contain at least five letters/symbols.
Under Novell this password is valid for 90 days shortly before which time you are prompted to change it.
You may change your password at any time with the following commands:
for Novell: setpass
for Unix: passwd
Having completed the procedure with login and password, under Novell, you are able to work either with DOS or with the Netware Menu, except for the server CAMPUS (see below). The available server software is listed on the Netware Menu.

Evoking Software

Those users who do not wish to use a Menu, must themselves set the search path and DOS variable for the required programme or application.
The Computer Centre programme SCHALTE manages this for you.

schalte
The input schalter (without a parameter) produces a list of the available software.
Located in the server's LOGIN directory are the individual descriptions ("prod.inf", e.g. the file win31.inf contains instructions for the use of Windows in the Network).

Input to enable the programme "prod": schalte +prod
Example:
schalte +mw60 evokes MS Word 6.0
It is possible to enable(+) and disable(-) several programmes/applications simultaneously:
schalte -borl-pas +mv60 disables the Pascal compiler and enables MS Word 6.0

Server CAMPUS (Novell)

The Standard (restricted) User ID gives access to the servers CAMPUS and Public (Unix).
After login under CAMPUS the available server software appears on a preset menu.

N.B. This server runs under Netware Version 4.1
This is why the network acquisition should ONLY be used with the new VLM drives and an appropriate configuration data set (CDS) "NET.CFG".
Otherwise, login is possible only in "Bindery Mode".

Concerning Windows:
WINPKT is automatically loaded prior to the evoking of Windows. When the PC is switched on the relevant directories and files, that are necessary for the local use of the server software, are copied to the PC's fixed disk.

N.B. Always logout at the end of a session with: F: logout

N.B. Public Access PCs
Hamburg University staff and students have access to PCs situated in certain Faculties and in the Computer Centre's User Pool.
Currently there are 40 connections for access via Modem/ISDN.
