"Here & Now" - the Victims of National Socialist Justice in Hamburg 1997.A wall, at right-angles to the entrance to the Hanseatische Oberlandsgericht (Hanseatic Provincial High Court and Court of Appeal) in Sievekingplatz. The number 1933 on grey granite is a cold and provoking reminder of the beginning of Nazi rule. The normal understanding of human justice was impossible under this totalitarian regime. The other side of the wall looking towards the "Planten un Blomen" park, a place of relaxation in the heart of the pulsing city, displays a panorama of the city. A coloured picture depicts Hamburg's current (1997) architectural stage of development. 90 iron columns of varied heights supporting pots containing various plants are randomly positioned on the grassed area in front of this city panorama. The rose grows next to the stinging nettle, the potato grows next to the lavender, the medicinal herb grows next to the poisonous plant, the exotic cactus grows next to the indigenous allium.

These plants symbolize human diversity. They represent the different social strata and countries of origin of the population of Hamburg. This concept of different plants all with the same need of care is a metaphor for equal rights.

The necessity of regularly renewing the plants represents the process of continuous remembrance.

"Here & Now" is a monument aimed at addressing people's active awareness. It is an attempt to keep alive the remembrance of the period between 1933 and 1945 so that Justice be always reminded of its human responsibility.

"Here & Now" is a place of both accountability and grief, a vibrant place in the heart of the city under the protection of law.
