Information

There are 40 analogue lines with an operating speed of from 28,800 bps available under the telephone number 040/41532. These modems are served by two ISDN primary multiplex terminals each with 30 channels.

Modem Access Dialup

For modem connection one requires a terminal emulation programme, e.g. Telix oder Kermit.
The following commands must be executed:
    atz Modem Reset
atdp41532 Telephone number dialup
When a connection is established the system reports CONNECT
Then follows a prompt:

login: enter your User ID

When you wish to use Internet services you are required to place a P in front of your User ID.
This indicates that you wish to establish the required PPP (Point to Point Protocol) connection.

Both a Project ID or a Standard (restricted) User ID are accepted.
Then follows the prompt:

Password: enter your UNIX PASSWORD
(Password for public.uni-hamburg.de or rzaixsrv1.rrz.uni-hamburg.de)

Initially the Project ID password is geheim; the Standard (restricted) User ID password is your metriculation number.
You should thereafter immediately change this password to your own individual password.
Do not forget it!!
The services SLIP (Serial Line Internet Protocol) and CSLIP are also available.
Correspondingly an S or a C must precede your User ID. SLIP and CSLIP are not officially supported.

PPP Configuration

There are freely available pre-configured diskettes with Shareware Versions of MacOS and Windows in the RRZ. These three diskettes (Windows 3.1) are available either to be copied in the User Consulting Office or via ftp under the address:
ftp://ftp.uni-hamburg.de/pub/unihh/rrz/modem/Windows.
A Zmodem Download of the software is possible from the public and server2 servers. Connect as described and enter the following UNIX commands:

winmodem0
winmodem1
winmodem2

Each of these commands sends the contents of each of the three diskettes by Zmodem Protocol. Take care that the files within the various directories are copied as written to the corresponding diskettes. (For UNIX freaks: /pub/modem/Windows). It is advisable to format the diskettes beforehand. A hard disk installation is possible and in this case the file install.bat is easily modified.

It is inadvisable, without experience of PPP, to attempt to operate the new modem access with the old diskettes (Poolpack 1.1).

The PPP connection can be alternatively made over PAP as for example when supported by Trumpet Winsock. When during the short pause between CONNECT and login a PPP packet is received the modem server immediately switches into PPP mode.
