Terminology

Account:
An authorized access to a Host (in this case the RRZ). Also a User ID (Project or Standard (restricted)).

Client:
A computer that uses the various resourses of a server (e.g. WWW, FTP, Gopher etc.)

DNS (Domain Name System):
The Domain Name System serves as in IP address, that every Host has, comparable to a post code e.g public.uni-hamburg.de = 134.100.41.1

FTP (File Transfer Protocol):
The File Transfer Protocol is a protocol for the transfer of files.

Gopher (slang = "go fer"):
Gopher is a protocol for the transfer of files. The user need not concern himself about the format in which the information exists or which method of access is possible (FTP etc.).

Host:
A computer with direct Internet connection and its own IP address.

IP Address:
A Host's Internet addresss.

PPP (Point To Point Protocol):
Point To Point Protocol is the most recent protocol for the operation of TCP/IP conforming applications via telephone cicuit. The Host must be equipped with SLIP software.

Server:
A computer that administers various resources (via FTP, Gopher etc.) and places them at the disposal of Clients.

SLIP (Serial Line Internet Protocol):
Serial Line Internet Protocol is an earlier protocol for the operation of TCP/IP conforming applications via telephone circuit. The Host must be equipped with SLIP software.

TCP/IP:
A collection of over 100 protocols for the connection of computers or networks. A protocol is a standard for data interchange between sending and receiving computers. TCP/IP includes for example direct transfer services in the Internet such as:

  • FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
  • SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) etc.
  • TCP (Transmission Control Protocol)
It divides the application data into Packets. In addition a code for error recognition (Checksum) is packed to increase the reliability of the transfer. Finally, each packet receives a consecutive number so that they can later be reassembled in the correct sequence.

    IP (Internet Protocol)
Internet Protocol undertakes metaphorically the role of the post and sends the individual TCP packets over the Internet to the addressee.

    Telnet:
Telnet allows individual computers the possibility of making use of foreign computers (Remote Login) i.e. their programmes or data, as though one were actually sitting at the console of the foreign computer.

    User ID:
Authorized access to a Host (in this case RRZ). Also Project or Standard (restricted) User ID.

    MacTCP Installation

    MacTCP has 3 essential constituents:

These three are found at given positions in the "System File":
    1. MacTCP as Control Field in the file Control Field
    2. MacTCP DNR in the System File
    3. MacTCP Prep in the file Preferences (automatically installed following the initial opening of MacTCP)

    MacTCP Set Up

    MacTCP Configuration

    First Step:
At initial configuration MacTCP should be opened over Control Field in the Apple Menu and PPP activated by mouse click.

    Second Step:
Then one chooses the Button Weitere Einstellungen/Further Settings and the following window is opened:

    1. Obtain Address

Here MacTCP is informed whether a static, a server conferred, or a dynamic address is to be used. The RRZ generally confers IP Addresses through the server.
A server conferred IP Address means that at every subsequent Login (system start) the user obtains an IP Address for the duration of the session.
Static IP Addresses are allocated through a User Account.

    2. IP Address
Setting as above: Class B/ Mask for Subnetwork: 255.255.255.0

    3. Routing Information:
Setting as above: 0.0.0.0 as Gateway Address

    4. Domain Name Server Information:
    Setting as above: public.uni-hamburg.de, 134.100.33.240

    FreePPP 2.5 vt 2 Installation

This programme consists of 2 essential components:
PPP Monkey Data 1 and Install PPP2.5v2

By clicking on the Install Programme following window is opened:

By clicking on the button Install the following window (with the monkey) appears:

By further clicking on the button Install the following window appears:

Following the successful completion of the installation the computer must be rebooted (system start).

    FreePPP Configuration

Following the Installation of FreePPP and a new Login (system start) the following menu line, with a telephone sysmbol, appears:

By clicking on this telephone symbol the following Pop-Up Menu appears:

Initially click on Open FreePPP Setup and the following window appears:

By clicking on the small arrow head, below left, the following menu appears:

Click on Open MacTCP to verify the MacTCP Setup.

By clicking on the button Weitere Einstellungen the following window appears:

The set-up should be carried out as described above under the heading MacTCP Configuration.

    FreePPP Configuration

By clicking on the button New one can set up a new profile.

Server name Here one has a free choice.

Phone number: The telephone number is 41532. When one is connected via a PABX (private automatic branch exchange) the number must be peceded by a 0.

    Connect: Directly

User name: Enter your User ID prefixed by P

    Password: Enter Password

When this procedure poses problems , one should attempt to connect with a Connection Script.

Connect: By choosing Using Connection Script the line Edit connection script appears underneath.
Click on this line and the following window appears:

The is a Pulldown Menu section, with either Wait for: or Send under Do and a Text Field section under Text. In the latter one enters the set-up commands.

    Enter the following lines:
