Hermann Kühn, 1899-1990

Employee in the "Jewish Department" of the Hamburg Gestapo until 1942

Because of his notorious brutality, Kriminalsekretär Hermann Kühn is counted, together with Walter Wohlers, as being one of the most notorious henchmen of the "Jew Specialist" Claus Göttsche.

Hermann Kühn was born on 7 June 1899 in Malankowo, West Prussia, as the son of a postal worker. He attended the Volksschule in Graudenz, as well asa a school for non-commissioned officers. In 1919, he entered service with the Hamburg uniformed police. In early 1933, he moved to criminal investigations. In September 1933, he joined the Hamburg Gestapo. He worked in the "Jewish Department" from 1935 until 1942, when he was transferred to Lüneburg.

Among Hamburg's Jews, Kühn was known as "the Bloodhound" because of his frequently brutal assaults during interrogations and house searches. Kühn was assigned several times to the Moorweide deportation collection centre (former Masonic Lodge), which was guarded by uniformed police officers. There, he assaulted his victims for having luggage above the fifty-kilogram limit, or for being too slow in obeying orders.

Kühn was arrested on 9 May 1945, and convicted in 1950 of physical assault, extorting testimony, and embezzlement for which he received a sentence of four years imprisonment. As his time served in custody was counted he was released in the following year.

Hermann Kühn died in Hamburg on 20 January 199o.
