Jewish Organisation of North-German Students (JONS)

The Jewish Organisation of North-German Students (JONS), a registered association, is an integral part of the Jewish Community in Hamburg. The JONS movement represents young Jews aged 18 to 35 in the regions of Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Bremen. JONS is, in this capacity, the first Jewish youth association in Northern Germany since the end of World War II.

Financial and moral support is given to JONS by the Jewish Community in Hamburg, represented by the members of the executive and advisory boards, as well as by the City of Hamburg, represented by Senator Dr. Thomas Mirow.
In order to promote its goals JONS has a board of trustees, which comprises Jewish and non-Jewish members. The present members of the board of trustees are (in alphabetical order):
Dov-Levy Barsilay, Rabbi of the City of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein
Paul Spiegel, Chairman of the Central Jewish Council in Germany
Dr. Jürgen Lüthje, President of the University of Hamburg
Jens J. Meyer, Spokesperson of the "Jahreszeiten"-Publishing Group
Jobst Plog, Director of the North-German Broadcasting Company (NDR)

It is impossible to revive what was wiped out in the years 1933-1945, however, it is our aim to introduce into our lives things that for various reasons have not been possible in Germany since the end of World War II.
The words of Theodor Herzl "if you will, it is no fairytale ...." demonstrate man's striving for the fulfillment of his dreams and visions. With the foundation of the first Jewish student organisation in Northern Germany since 1945, it is our desire to promote an active participation of Jewish youth in German society, helping to secure a peaceful and joint future.
Currently contributing towards this goal is the JONS project "Bridge of Understanding", whereby young Jewish individuals visit schools to discuss similarities as opposed to letting prejudice prevail.
