| Honouring the founder of German exile literature research, Walter A. Berendsohn, the "Hamburger Arbeitsstelle für deutsche Exilliteratur" (HAfdE) was renamed into "Walter-A.-Berendsohn-Forschungsstelle für deutsche Exiliiteratur" (BFfdE) on Jan. 18th 2001.
In the first decade after World War II the fate of exiles expelled by the national socialist dictatorship found neither public nor scientific interest. The foundation of the HAfdE in 1970(71 thus marks a major step in the development of a critical approach to history. It has now become an established facility of the institute for literary studies at the University of Hamburg.
Collections on exile literature also exist in other institutes, e.g. the "Deutsche Bibliothek" in Frankfurt, but the BFfdE is the only scientific facility at a German university focusing on this topic.
Its founder was Prof. Dr. Hans Wolffheim (dec. 1973), whose successor was Hans-Albert Walter from 1976- 1981. Since 1984 the BFfdE is lead by Prof. Dr. Frithjof Trapp. Its activities include seminars, providing support for scientific essays and general information about exile literature.
Its library is open to the public at following times
mon, tue, wed & fri: 10am-2pm
