Ethio-SPARE: Cultural Heritage of Christian Ethiopia. Salvation, Preservation, Research

In December 2009, Dr Denis Nosnitsin of the HLCES was awarded the prestigious Independent Researcher Starting Grant by the European Research Council. Thanks to the generous funding, the project Ethio-SPARE: Cultural Heritage of Christian Ethiopia. Salvation, Preservation, Research was called into life.

In the course of five years, an international team of young scholars headed by Denis Nosnitsin will dedicate their efforts to securing, preserving, evaluating and analysing the written heritage of Christian Ethiopia.

Ethiopian manuscripts are in the focus of attention. Written mostly in Ge'ez, the liturgical language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, in literary use ever since the introduction of Christianity in the 4th century AD, these unique documents are of great value for the region, the world history and for the scholarship. Important collections will be identified, manuscripts digitized and catalogued, new texts published, particularly endangered books restored.
