Library
The HLCES hosts the specialized library for the research on Ethiopia, Eritrea and the entire Horn of Africa. The bulk was formed by the private library assembled by Ernst Hammerschmidt and acquired by the Research Unit Ethiopian Studies. It is being constantly enlarged by Siegbert Uhlig and Alessandro Bausi. In 2011, a library for Coptic studies (personal collection of Tito Orlandi) was additionally accommodated in the HLCES.The Hammerschmidt library has one of the worldwide largest collections on Ethiopian history and philology. It also possesses complete collections of specialized journals, reference works and several nineteenth and early twentieth century travel reports. The Library is in the course of cataloguing.
The Hammeschmidt library is accessible for visitors on Fridays from 11 to 13 and from 14 to 16 and on personal arrangement. The items should be consulted in the library. A PC with a scanner can be used by library visitors under supervision. In exceptional cases, short-term borrowing is permitted for copying for up to three items. Borrowers are requested to leave an identity document. Books published prior to 1900 cannot be borrowed.
